Engineering Manager

Invest in your career

We usually respond within three days

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join our BUX team based in Amsterdam.

Our engineering team sits at the heart of the company. We have a well-rounded team that cares about building great products that matter. You’ll be part of a modern fintech company where you can try things, break things, fix them, and learn fast. Your work is visible, your input matters, and you help shape both the product and how we build it. We stay close to what’s happening in the world of investing and fintech, and we share what we learn. It’s a place where you can stretch your skills, contribute to something real, and grow alongside people who take their craft seriously and enjoy building things together.

What you will do

In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead and mentor engineers of different stacks and set up the needed processes to optimise engineering work throughput and project execution. Alongside Product owners and Staff engineers, you will own the planning and prioritisation of projects.

You will be the person who has the most accurate overview of staff capacity across teams, and how that capacity is allocated on a day-by-day basis (who works on what), always thinking in terms of the broader dev organisation, making sure we are set up for long-term continuous success across different projects. Together with the Head of Engineering, you will be the first point of contact for hiring new members of the dev team.

As an Engineering Manager, your job is to organise, own and lead from the front. This could mean:

  • You have 1:1s with team members, where you learn about what processes the team is struggling with and needs changing

  • You discuss with the Product Owners and the Staff Engineer(s) the staffing requirements of a new project, and which team member(s) are most suitable to pick up the work on this project

  • Follow, learn, apply and advocate for modern software development practices

  • Are accountable for the planning and follow-up of the delivery of multiple concurrent projects

  • Raise awareness of technical debt, with the Product Owner and the Head of Engineering, and proactively address it in a planned and organised manner

  • Help plan and account for the career development of the less experienced colleagues in the team

  • Collaborate with colleagues across teams for the planning of broader impact projects

What you need to succeed

  • You have a technical background (3+ years in a software engineer role) and can understand, sometimes lead, and debate architecture and system design topics with the Product Owner, Staff Engineers and other Engineering Managers in the wider engineering team

  • You take initiative and push hard to turn ideas into real results

  • A keen eye for detail while always keeping the big picture in mind

  • You run effective 1:1s with several team members and actively help them grow in their careers.

  • Ability to lead the evaluation and hiring processes, on an organisational level for the engineering team

  • You communicate clearly, spoken and written, and you use that clarity to build trust and work smoothly with others

  • You regularly use GenAI tools, stay up to date with new ones, and encourage the team to use them to speed up delivery and improve how everyone works

Nice to have

  • Ability to own and lead the planning and prioritisation of concurrent projects, from a project manager's point of view, together with the PO (product view) and the Staff Engineers (technical view)

  • Solid knowledge of well-accepted solutions to common team alignment challenges

  • Strong ability to distinguish technical vs product roadmap tradeoffs

  • Strong ability to communicate the rationale behind technical and managerial decisions, especially when they impact team priorities or workflows, to other technical or non-technical colleagues

Why join BUX as an Engineering Manager?

  • You will have space to share your ideas and be encouraged to express your voice

  • You will be the leading voice for staff allocation, with the authority to make the decision

  • You will have the freedom to evaluate new tools that can be used to increase productivity, cut down on unnecessary processes, and improve the software development flow

  • You will be leading the career growth of multiple team members

  • Lastly, the business domain is interesting. You will learn how the financial system works on the inside
