Building the Gyms Where Physical AI Learns to Work

Physical AI can't be trained on the internet. It has to be trained in the real world - through seeing, hearing and feeling real tasks in real environments. That's what NEURA Gym is about: a global network of physical training centers where robots learn industrial skills directly from the people who've mastered them.

As Senior Robotics Commissioning & Service Engineer, you own the commissioning and maintenance of our humanoid robot 4NE-1, from mechanical integration and calibration to a fully operational robot on our ROS2/Linux platform. You work within NeuraGym's shared infrastructure alongside MAiRA and MiPA, setting the standards, judgment calls, and escalation point for junior technicians.

Your mission & challenges

Commissioning

  • Integrate and calibrate drives, gear/actuator systems, sensors (encoders, IMUs, force/torque sensors, cameras), and fieldbus communication

  • Execute bring-up sequences (joint homing, calibration checks) and confirm firmware, sensors, and actuators are healthy before a session

Service & maintenance

  • Perform fault analysis across hardware/software; reproduce issues, interpret logs, and isolate root causes

  • Exercise sound judgment on fault states - know when to escalate versus reset and continue

  • Operate 4NE-1 during data-collection sessions, ensuring reliable runs for our AI teams

Technical ownership & leadership

  • Set commissioning standards, document processes, and feed structured input into mechanical/software design

  • Guide and mentor junior technicians; act as escalation point for complex or undocumented issues

  • Work confidently with incomplete documentation in an active prototype environment - you help define the process

What we can look forward to

Experience

  • Several years hands-on experience in commissioning, maintenance, or prototype-building of complex mechatronic/robotic systems

  • Vocational training, technician qualification, or degree in mechatronics/electrical/mechanical engineering - or equivalent experience

Robotics & mechatronics

  • Hands-on experience with actuators, gear systems, and mechatronic assemblies; strong understanding of mechanical assemblies and drive technology

  • Troubleshooting mechanical faults (backlash, misalignment, wear) using standard tools (dial indicators, torque wrenches, alignment lasers, oscilloscopes)

  • Working knowledge of sensors (encoders, IMUs, force/torque sensors, cameras), fieldbus communication, and robot kinematics/control fundamentals

Software & systems (applied, not developer-level)

You don't need to write production software - just navigate Linux, read logs, and run small scripts.

  • Linux/Ubuntu command-line, SSH and remote access to robot compute

  • Start, stop, and monitor the ROS2-based stack; recognize when something isn't working to escalate or restart

  • Read and adapt existing Python scripts for diagnostics (no software development expected); basic Docker and TCP/IP networking

Commissioning & operations

  • Independent bring-up sequences and first-line triage; sound judgment on escalation vs. reset

Nice-to-have

  • Experience with EtherCAT · Basic C++ (read/adjust simple code) · Basic Git for firmware/config versioning

Soft skills

  • Genuine willingness to work hands-on with hardware in a fast-paced prototype environment

  • Structured, well-documented work style; comfortable with autonomy and ambiguity

  • Clear communication across mechanical and software teams; fluent in English, German skills are beneficial
