We celebrate diversity and encourage individuals of all genders (m/f/d) to apply.
We’re on the lookout for a Lead Data Platform Engineer to join our Engineering team at our office in Berlin. Join us in building the largest AI enabled fintech for healthcare!
At Nelly, we’re building data infrastructure that teams actually want to use. Our data doesn’t just flow — it’s discoverable, well-documented, and designed with the developer experience in mind. Every pipeline, schema, and tool we build ultimately serves a single goal: enabling teams to deliver more value to customers. We’re moving beyond basic data pipelines toward a trusted, collaborative platform — one where data consumers can find what they need, understand how to use it, and contribute back to its evolution. These pipelines will power strongly AI-enabled products and user flows.
As a Lead Data Platform Engineer, you’ll be joining a freshly launched team - shaping the technical direction and building the platform capabilities that make future growth sustainable. This role isn’t about moving data from A to B — it’s about treating data infrastructure as a product, serving internal teams through clean APIs, clear contracts, and comprehensive documentation. If you care about elegant systems, evolving schemas, and transforming messy data into accessible, reliable interfaces, this is your opportunity.

Join us now if you’re driven by impact, excited by fast-paced innovation, and ready to shape the future of healthcare!

Joining us, you will

  • Design data model evolution processes including schema versioning, breaking change management, and impact communication
  • Implement data catalog solutions and documentation practices that make metadata and lineage first-class concerns, not afterthoughts to support the data governance and security best practices in a regulated industry
  • Shape the technical direction of our newly-formed data platform team, from tool selection to API patterns to data governance approaches
  • Architect and build backend services in NodeJS/Python that enable teams to access and work with data confidently and in a reliable manner in order to build user-facing and AI-backed products
  • Bridge backend engineering and data infrastructure, translating team needs into platform capabilities with developer experience in mind, that are scalable and unlock product innovation.

What you'll bring

  • 2+ years data platform engineering experience and 6+ years of overall experience in the industry.
  • Strong software engineering experience in Python with production REST API and data pipeline experience
  • Deep passion for documentation and knowledge sharing - you've championed documentation-first practices and believe undocumented data is nearly useless
  • Data catalog experience to set up a documentation basis on top the basis of Database Schemas (Postgres), OpenAPI schemas and language-agnostic IDLs
  • Proven ability to influence engineering culture and spread best practices across teams without formal authority
  • Experience with data model evolution including versioning strategies, migration processes, as well as data modeling practices to e.g. support processing of real-time, unstructured data to form structured bi-temporal stable representations
  • Experience in enabling AI use cases by making data accessible both in an online manner as well as for offline evluation
  • Plus: AWS experience (big plus) and Dagster familiarity to accelerate onboarding with existing infrastructure
  • Plus: experience working in highly regulated environments, with heavy security and compliance requirements
