Who we are
Marvel Fusion, founded in 2019 and based in Munich, is a technology pioneer in the field of safe, clean, and reliable power generation. With the aim of solving one of the biggest problems of humanity, we are developing a completely new type of fusion energy technology that dramatically increases the probability of fusion and builds on recent advances in laser and nanoscience.
Why Marvel Fusion
By joining us, you will be:
- Solving one of the most complex technological challenges known to humanity, harnessing Fusion on Earth
- Part of a highly purpose-driven team working on providing the world with clean, safe and abundant energy
- Working alongside world-leading scientists and entrepreneurs in the field of Fusion
- Part of a start-up where growth on a company and individual level is the default
The impact you will make
As a Laser Scientist at the cutting edge of high-intensity laser science, you will help shape how ultrafast laser pulses are transported, manipulated, and precisely delivered to some of the most advanced experiments in the world. Your role bridges the gap between laser generation and application—focusing on beam diagnostics, nonlinear optics, dispersion control, and beamline engineering.
You will work hands-on with large aperture beams, develop precision diagnostic methods, and help optimize pulse quality for next-generation fusion and high-field science platforms. This is an opportunity to grow your expertise while collaborating with world-class teams in a fast-paced, international environment. You’ll make a tangible impact on experiments that push the limits of physics and pave the way for sustainable energy and advanced materials research.
Your responsibilities
- Align, operate, and optimize large-aperture, ultrafast laser beam lines for experimental applications.
- Apply and refine dispersion management strategies to maintain high pulse fidelity.
- Contribute to beam transport and conditioning system designs, with attention to coating selection, laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDT), and vacuum compatibility.
- Perform diagnostics on ultrashort pulses using tools like SPIDER, FROG, auto-correlators, and beam profilers.
- Implement and and use nonlinear optical techniques to optimize beam transport system.
- Collaborate with engineering and optics teams on beam line layout, component integration, and optical simulations (ZEMAX, Matlab, Python).
- Maintain and update laser operation and safety procedures in coordination with senior scientists and safety officers.
What you bring
- You have completed a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field, or possess equivalent experience with comparable breadth and depth.
- 3+ years of postdoctoral (or equivalent) experience in experimental studies of ultrafast laser physics involving high-energy or high-average power lasers.
- Solid understanding of laser science, nonlinear optics, and ultrafast pulse propagation.
- Familiarity with large aperture beam handling and spatial beam shaping techniques.
- Knowledge of dispersion compensation techniques in spatial and temporal dimensions.
- Awareness of optical coating technologies and their impact on LIDT and performance in vacuum environments.
- A passion for precision lab work and collaborative problem-solving.
- Flexibility, initiative, and a proactive mindset in dynamic experimental settings.
- You demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- You are willing to reside in the greater Munich area.
What sets you apart
- Experience with optical design/simulation in Matlab, Python, and ZEMAX.
