The impact you will make
Our mission is to unlock the potential of fusion power generation: abundant, clean, economic and safe energy. On the critical path is the demonstration of the key features of Marvel Fusion’s unique fusion approach leveraging ultra-high intensity, short-pulse lasers and nanostructured targets. In recent years, the Experimental Physics Group at Marvel Fusion has implemented a new research laboratory at a world-class, ultra-high-intensity, short-pulse laser facility in the Greater Munich area. Moreover, we’re partnering with domestic and international laser facilities and institutes, including the world’s most powerful laser facility ELI-NP in Măgurele (RO) and a revolutionary high-power laser facility in Colorado (US), to advance our novel approach to fusion.
Together, these facilities provide an excellent research platform to conduct groundbreaking laser-fusion research. As a Senior Experimental Scientist you will become part of our team of seasoned scientists and will be responsible for planning and executing pioneering experimental campaigns in laser-driven fusion, including development of novel diagnostic instruments with high fidelity, always keeping our goal in mind: to make fusion energy happen.
Your responsibilities
- You will plan and manage key experimental campaigns in the field of nuclear fusion driven by ultra-short, high intensity laser pulses interacting with advanced targets at facilities worldwide, which will include:
- Take ownership of an experimental program aimed at studying a key aspect of the fusion concept.
- Formulate experimental goals, define project planning and lead a team of scientists and engineers in experimental campaigns.
- Integrate new diagnostics for ultrashort laser-plasma interaction and nuclear fusion processes based on sources of neutrons, photons and charged particles.
- Data analysis and data reduction, and their comparison to numerical simulation results.
- You drive innovation towards data-driven, high-rep-rate analysis utilizing the latest detector technologies and AI-driven approaches.
- You lead a team of scientists and engineers creating working plans and setting project goals in a highly dynamic working environment.
- You write (scientific) reports and present findings to management and key stakeholders.
- You are a key element of defining and pursuing the forefront scientific mission of the company, following a strict code of ethics, and always protecting any confidential information.
Activities will initially be performed in the Greater Munich (DE) area, with occasional travel to research facilities worldwide.
What you bring
- You have completed a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field, or equivalent breadth and depth of experience.
- >5 years of experience as PostDoc (or equivalent) in experimental studies of ultra-high intensity laser plasma interaction, high energy density laboratory physics, nuclear physics or laser-driven particle acceleration is required.
- You have led cross-functional teams in experimental campaigns, e.g., as a Principal Investigator.
- You have excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Willingness to reside in the greater Munich area.
