POSITION SUMMARY
The Research Veterinarian maintains clinical oversight of the research grade neonatal piglet population and surrogate herd for the eGenesis site. Additionally, this individual will manage personnel within the veterinary and neonatal teams. The Research Veterinarian will oversee internal in vivo studies conducted at the site and advise on regulatory compliance related to animal activities.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage veterinary staff, manager of donor resources and oversight of neonatal care staff
- Provide personnel management including goal setting, performance reviews, conflict resolution, scheduling and training documentation oversight
- Support from leadership to enroll in continued education opportunities to maintain certifications, attend seminars and career development
- Promote and adhere to the eGenesis animal welfare policies
- Follow all applicable regulatory requirements (USDA, FDA, OLAW) regarding animal welfare and ensure humane care according to the Guide for the care and use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act
- Perform other duties and assume additional responsibilities as assigned
- Participate in all surgery activities and advanced reproductive procedures such as embryo transfers and c-sections
- Evaluate neonate piglets daily and work with neonatal care team to implement treatment plans for any health concerns that arise
- Perform necropsies and submit diagnostic samples for relevant research and clinical cases to ensure health of donor and surrogate herds or provide findings to development team
- Perform ultrasound examinations according to study designs or for clinical assessments – intermediate skill level for abdominal imaging with plan to develop echocardiography skill
- Clinical support for surrogate herd including routine medical cases, ultrasound diagnostics
- Manage and participate on-call vet support during weekends to the staff
- May need to train for backup support for laparoscopic ovum pick-up procedures
- Develop a veterinary science department with expansion according to research needs in support of eGenesis xenotransplantation platform
- Collaborate with veterinarians and leadership across other eGenesis sites to manage veterinary care and population health programs
- Facilitate staff development in area of laboratory animal science
- Oversight of all barns to meet IACUC standards and USDA regulations
- Participate in IACUC activities including inspections, advising of team members, interpretation of regulatory requirements, and serving as alternate veterinarian on committee
- Draft, review, and revise SOPs relevant to the neonatal, veterinary, and general animal care activities
- Participate in scientific and management meetings with Cambridge and Indiana sites, including donor animal allocation, preclinical development, and regulatory
- Serve on internal eGenesis Publication Committee for review, collaboration, or preparation of manuscripts
- Develop and provide an annual training program to the Animal care, Neonatal and Vet tech team to assure compliance with animal welfare regulations and animal treatment plans
- Work in collaboration with veterinarians to identify potential biosecurity and husbandry process improvements in the neonatal area
- Report unsafe acts and conditions and ensure equipment is maintained correctly
- Report all accidents/incidents. Inspect work area and take remedial action to minimize or eliminate hazards: complete required training assignments, forms, and other paperwork
- As essential personnel, occasional animal work outside of normal business hours or availability for emergency response may be required but very limited

Ensure compliance with company biosecurity practices to safeguard health of all animals produced by eGenesis
Promote and adhere to safety in the workplace.
Tasks are completed during regular business hours Monday-Friday
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- DVM or VMD from AVMA-accredited institution; may substitute completion of ECFVG program for graduates of non-AVMA schools.
- License to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state; must attain Wisconsin licensure within 6 months of hire.
- DEA Registration for maintenance of controlled drugs on site.
- USDA Accreditation Category II
- 5 years of experience working with animals in a research environment
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize work
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
- Interpersonal skills necessary to manage others
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- ACLAM board certification or residency training in laboratory animal medicine with eligibility to take ACLAM board exam
- Background in either swine management/research or experience in breeding/neonate management of any species
- 1-3 years of management experience
PHYSICAL DEMPANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequentlyis required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands or arms, lift files and operate a computer. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust to focus. The employee frequentlyis required to lift laboratory supplies and equipment within the daily routine. Occasionally the employee may be required to handle and work with large animals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job operates in multiple environments, including office, laboratory, and animal husbandry environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, filing cabinets, and fax machines. This job may require the use of hazardous chemicals, conduct sample collection on livestock and operate in a dusty environment.
