Thanks to our unique technology, DeepL is able to provide the world’s best AI language services. To keep it that way, we need your expert linguistic and communication skills. You will join our international and highly motivated team of linguists at DeepL, providing linguistic expertise and industry insights throughout the company to help break down language barriers and bring the language industry into the age of AI. You will serve as a linguistic and cultural advisor across the company, bringing industry insights and expertise throughout project and product lifecycles. Your work will include testing and evaluating DeepL’s products, as well as identifying, classifying, and reporting on systemic errors. The job will also give you the opportunity to grow and learn alongside other talented professionals as you take on a wide array of interesting linguistic tasks that require problem-solving, language analysis, proofreading, editing and reviewing language data, and advising on various cultural aspects of your language. Your responsibilities
Serve as a linguistic advisor for your language across the company, interacting with a wide range of stakeholders from Research to Product to Sales and beyond
Test and evaluate DeepL’s products and their features both before and after launch
Assess the linguistic quality of data generated by both humans and machines
Work with colleagues in Language Data & Insights and Research to help guarantee the quality of the linguistic data DeepL uses to train its models
Design tests and examples to help DeepL identify the right freelancers for linguistic projects
Evaluate work done by freelance linguists and provide them with actionable feedback based on project needs and expectations
Work with ambiguous and/or highly complex language data in your language plus at least one foreign language
Investigate and evaluate language complaints submitted by users and offer your linguistic analysis
Explain linguistic phenomens to a wide range of target audiences, from those with little to no linguistic expertise to fellow linguists
Qualities we look for
Fluent Mandarin speaker
An educational background from China
Bachelor’s degree in linguistics, translation, foreign languages, language teaching, or a related field
At least 2 years of experience working in translation, localization, linguistics, education, or a related field
English fluency (C1+)
Expert understanding of Mandarin language, from the linguistic perspective and the ability to break down complex linguistic matters in a way that anyone can understand, including non-speakers of that language
Deep knowledge of and familiarity with reputable linguistic resources for Mandarin Chinese
Expert understanding of research best practices
Experience working with machine translation and identifying error patterns common to machine output
Exceptional communication skills, both written and spoken
Comfortable working in a dynamic environment and adapting to new circumstances
The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or higher in linguistics, translation, foreign languages, language teaching, or a related field (Or a Bachelor’s degree plus 4 or more years of experience in the industry)
Fluency (B2+) in at least one other foreign language—the more, the better!
At least a basic understanding of LLMs, NLP, AI
Experience with AI prompting
Teaching experience is a plus
