The API team
Thanks to our unique neural networks, DeepL is able to deliver the world’s best translation quality. Many thousands of users use our API to bring our translations into their applications, translating billions of characters per month.
The API team’s mission is to make our AI easy to use by providing open source libraries in a wide range of programming languages - to date we have released client libraries for Python, .NET, Node.js, PHP, and Java. You can find more on our GitHub: https://github.com/DeepLcom.
The API team works closely with our core product team and solution consultants to bring our API customers our latest innovations to solve their business needs, and is a highly experienced cross-functional team based in our newly formed NY tech hub.
The team builds our backend services (C#, ASP.NET Core), adding exciting new API features. The team is also responsible for developing our client libraries and making sure that they deliver value to the developer community.
What you will do
As Engineering Manager, you lead the API team to excellence through:
- People Leadership: Inspire, develop, recruit, and motivate a cross-functional engineering team of 5-8 engineers. Conduct regular 1:1s with team members, set individual development or improvement plans, and foster a healthy, non-retaliatory feedback culture within the team.
- Delivery management: Ensure timely delivery of new features, maintain existing ones, and establish high engineering excellence metrics. Collaborating with key stakeholders, representing the team’s engineering perspective on the feasibility, cost-effectiveness, scalability, and time-to-market aspects of new or existing services and products.
- Technical guidance: Actively contribute to resolving technical issues and challenges by participating in code reviews, system design discussions, and occasionally engaging in hands-on coding to support team members. Actively participate in building and maintaining the technical roadmap, and take ownership of technical incident management.
- Managing growth: You derive satisfaction from navigating change and collaboratively discovering innovative solutions with your team and various stakeholders within a dynamic and evolving environment.
- Strategic Leadership: Responsibility includes guiding the strategic direction of the team's engagements and collaborating with stakeholders, partnering with a member of the Product Management team to jointly oversee the team’s strategy, quarterly goals, and business-technical metrics.

Skills you will need in this role
- Hands-on experience in software development and architecture at scale
- A Proven track record of leading and scaling product development teams
- Strong understanding of software delivery methodologies and ability to improve predictability, velocity and quality of software delivery
- Experience collaborating with non-technical stakeholders in a b2b environment
- Ability to adapt easily to new environments and technologies in a scaling and rapidly changing environment
- Excellent communication skills in English with a strong sense of empathy and a solutions-oriented mindset
- In person collaboration Comfortable with a hybrid working model and able to come into our New York office regularly (3x per week). This is important in order to build a strong collaborative culture within our NY hub.

Salary Range
Please note: This is an exempt position. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience and location.
Base Salary Range: $200k-250k+ Annually
